Native American Moccasins: Moccasins were created early in the seventeenth century by Native Americans to cushion their feet.  These are thought to be one of the earliest forms of shoes worn.  Native Americans wore them in many tribes and they also traded them to early settlers.  Native American Moccasins are soft, comfortable shoes that provide great traction and less risk of slipping or falling on slick floors. 

Many tribes decorated moccasins with beads and paint, often in reference to the tribe they belonged and their status.  For instance, others could recognize the hunters of certain tribes according to the specific colors and images painted on their shoes.  Moccasins are crafted a little different from tribe to tribe.  Tribes in mountainous terrains generally had moccasins made with more leather for better protection of their feet where as tribes like the Apache Indians had moccasins from just two pieces of leather to simply cover their soles.  The styles also differed between each tribe and some tribes wore different styles for hunting and others for tribal gatherings. 

Softer soled moccasins were usually created with just a piece of animal hide, large enough to wrap around the foot and sewn in the front.  Moccasins were a tougher structure of a few leather pieces to add more durability and protection from constant use and travel.  Many Native American moccasins were lined with lamb’s wool for added warmth.  During the colder winter months, more materials were used to cover their feet entirely and higher up the leg.  These moccasins were sewn at the seams inward to last longer to avoid threading coming loose.

Even today these Native American moccasins have become widely popular due to their great comfort, warmth and style as a great alternative to Ugg boots and basic slippers.
